The Fault In Our Stars - Book Review

I dedicated this entry to Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, my favourite fictional couple.

SPOILER ALERT.
(like I'm serious, there are alot of spoilers so if you plan to read the book yourself then please just close the tab and pretend you never saw this.
DON'T SPOIL THE BOOK FOR YOURSELF.)

Funny, I've never wrote a book review before.
so here we go to my very first ( and lacking ) book review =)

Synopsis :
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.
Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green's most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Even reading the synopsis of this book, you'll feel attracted to see how the author will address their love and shape the characters.
and may I say that John Green has not disappointed his readers.

They say our destinies are written in stars and as I quote this book directly,

Never was Shakespeare more wrong than when he had Cassius note, "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars. But in ourselves."

Were she better or you sicker,
then the stars would not be so terribly crossed
but it is the nature of stars to cross
...there is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars.
-The Fault In Our Stars, John Green.

This book is as expected, about life and death and everything in between.
At the starting, you're laughing at the humor and the metaphor.
In the end, you don't want the book to end that you read so slowly, almost devouring every word, afraid of the ending.

yeah, that's what The Fault In Our Stars is about.

Hazel was a 16-year old girl dying of cancer, or instead living with cancer.
and all she ever wanted was to leave nothing in the world so she wouldn't have to hurt anyone.
I remember precisely from the book when she called herself a grenade.

she wanted to just keep to herself so that one day,
if she bit it from cancer, at least the people around her wouldn't be so hurt.
Oh Hazel.

Augustus, on the other hand is around a total opposite.
He wanted to leave something for people to remember before he died.
He was afraid of oblivion.
He wanted to be remembered.

When I first started reading, I was certain that this was going to be a typical girl-is-sick-boy-is-sad-when-girl-dies type of story.
How very wrong I was.
If I could go back to yesterday, I'll laugh at myself and say, "STUPID".
Thank god I can't.

because when you come to this part of the story when Augustus went for a PET scan and finally told Hazel,

This is truly a moment when I think all his readers want to just bawl their eyes out.
DAMN OUR STARS.

I bet everyone who read the synopsis would think Augustus would be the one watching Hazel die.
but it was Hazel would watched Augustus died.
How life toys us around.

The book gives you healthy readers an insight on appreciating life,
it shows you how lucky you are when Hazel can't breathe well without her breathing tubes, or Augustus who had to live with one leg and finally died or even Isaac who lose his eyesight and was broken-hearted because of it.

One of the most heart-breaking moments in this wonderful book is when Hazel and Isaac wrote their respective eulogy for Augustus.
This makes me wonder when Augustus requested them to write eulogy for him.
did he know that he wasn't going to make it any longer?
Do people know when they are close to death?

My name is Hazel. Augustus Waters was the great star-crossed love of my life. Ours was an epic love story, and I won’t be able to get more than a sentence into it without disappearing into a puddle of tears. Gus knew. Gus knows. I will not tell you our love story, because – like all real love stories – it will die with us, as it should. I’d hoped that he’d be eulogizing me, because there’s no one I’d rather have…I can’t talk about our love story, so I will talk about math. I am not a mathematician but I know this: there are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There’s .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I’m likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.
"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities".
I think one of the best quotations of John Green.
I love how he beautifully describes the meaning of the line above with simple Mathematics.
There are so many beautiful quotes that John Green has written,
IT MAKES ME JEALOUS.

"Grief does not change you. It reveals you".

and I think one of the most popular quotes that almost everyone knows from TFIOS is,

dang. metaphor.

The saddest part of the book?
probably Augustus letter to Van Houten, the ending of the book.
Direct quoting.

Van Houten, I’m a good person but a shitty writer. You’re a shitty person but a good writer. We’d make a good team. I don’t want to ask you any favors, but if you have time – and from what I saw, you have plenty – I was wondering if you could write a eulogy for Hazel. I’ve got notes and everything, but if you could just make it into a coherent whole or whatever? Or even just tell me what I should say differently. Here’s the thing about Hazel: Almost everyone is obsessed with leaving a mark upon the world. Bequeathing a legacy. Outlasting death. We all want to be remembered. I do, too. That’s what bothers me most, is being another unremembered casualty in the ancient and inglorious war against disease.I want to leave a mark. But Van Houten: The marks humans leave are too often scars. You build a hideous minimall or start a coup or try to become a rock star and you think, “They’ll remember me now,” but (a) they don’t remember you, and (b) all you leave behind are more scars. Your coup becomes a dictatorship. Your minimall becomes a lesion.(Okay, maybe I’m not such a shitty writer. But I can’t pull my ideas together, Van Houten. My thoughts are stars I can’t fathom into constellations.)We are like a bunch of dogs squirting on fire hydrants. We poison the groundwater with our toxic piss, marking everything MINE in a ridiculous attempt to survive our deaths. I can’t stop pissing on fire hydrants. I know it’s silly and useless – epically useless in my current state – but I am an animal like any other.Hazel is different. She walks lightly, old man. She walks lightly upon the earth. Hazel knows the truth: We’re as likely to hurt the universe as we are to help it, and we’re not likely to do either.People will say it’s sad that she leaves a lesser scar, that fewer remember her, that she was loved deeply but not widely. But it’s not sad, Van Houten. It’s triumphant. It’s heroic. Isn’t that the real heroism? Like the doctors say: First, do no harm. The real heroes anyway aren’t the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention. The guy who invented the smallpox vaccine didn’t actually invented anything. He just noticed that people with cowpox didn’t get smallpox. After my PET scan lit up, I snuck into the ICU and saw her while she was unconscious. I just walked in behind a nurse with a badge and I got to sit next to her for like ten minutes before I got caught. I really thought she was going to die, too. It was brutal: the incessant mechanized haranguing of intensive care. She had this dark cancer water dripping out of her chest. Eyes closed. Intubated. But her hand was still her hand, still warm and the nails painted this almost black dark blue and I just held her hand and tried to imagine the world without us and for about one second I was a good enough person to hope she died so she would never know that I was going, too. But then I wanted more time so we could fall in love. I got my wish, I suppose. I left my scar.A nurse guy came in and told me I had to leave, that visitors weren’t allowed, and I asked if she was doing okay, and the guy said, “She’s still taking on water.” A desert blessing, an ocean curse. What else? She is so beautiful. You don’t get tired of looking at her. You never worry if she is smarter than you: You know she is. She is funny without ever being mean. I love her. I am so lucky to love her, Van Houten. You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers.

and after that, Hazel monologues two sentences to herself which perhaps broke the heart of every single reader,

I do, Augustus.
I do.

I seriously love the last paragraph of the letter.

"Without pain, we wouldn't know joy", another quote from the book itself.
Although their love was short and a painful one, they had their happy moments with their dry humor and I do look forward to the movie coming out next year.
Hopefully it will make a person as unemotional as me to cry.
yay.

 Oh Augustus.
so in conclusion, I'm going to reread "The Fault In Our Stars" again and just relive the moments one more time before moving on to my other books.
Definitely recommend this book to all of you,
packed with humour, family and emotions,
it's like a gift from heaven.

and indeed I agreed with John Greed,

There is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars.

I Caught Fire With Thor

credits: quote from catching fire, collins.

CATCHING FIRE IS GONNA BE OUT IN CINEMAS SOON.
tralalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala

so the official release date for Catching Fire will be on 22nd November 2013 =D
OMG.
Here's the trailer if you haven't watched it yet!

even the trailer is dang badass lah omgg HAHAHAHAHA

The person I'm most excited to see?
Definitely Finnick.
*yess i wanna see Finnick in his underwear*
i mean, look at him, always forgetting his pants HAHAHA
omg i sound like a pervert.

he reminds me of Gray from Fairytail =)
another dude I love who keeps forgetting his clothes haha.
#FinnickRules

of course there's also Gale .. oh Gale.
It's okay even if you're heartbroken over Katniss.
I'LL DATE YOU ANYDAY, ANYTIME.
i'm just such a depressed fangirl.

and there's Peeta ~
oh my Peeta.
I expect some really emotional scenes or at least somewhat romantic between Katniss and Peeta based on what I read from the books or imma flip the cinema screen.
*I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THAT ONE*

“Maybe it should be you,” I say matter-of-factly as I pull up a chair. “You hate life, anyway.”
“Very true,” says Haymitch. “And since last time I tried to keep you alive... seems like I'm obligated to save the boy this time.”
“That's another good point,” I say, wiping my nose and tipping up the bottle again.
“Peeta's argument is that since I chose you, I now owe him. Anything he wants. And what he wants is the chance to go in again to protect you,” says Haymitch.
I knew it. In this way, Peeta's not hard to predict. While I was wallowing around on the floor of that cellar, thinking only of myself, he was here, thinking only of me. Shame isn't a strong enough word for what I feel.
“You could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve him, you know,” Haymitch says.

that quote always makes me sad =<
it's true, Peeta and Gale are just too good to be true...
.........
..........
I WANT ONE !

AND DUH,
I'm looking forward to see Jennifer Lawrence once again as the Girl On Fire,
I swear no one can pull off that character but her,
she just, suits it.
It's her character babe.
yeah, something like that.

OH OH OH.

THOR 2 IS COMING OUT AS WELL AT THE END OF THIS MONTH !
trailer for the slow dimwits.

like asasdfghjkllkjhgfdssdfghjkllkjhgfds CHRIS HEMSWORTH *drops eyesballs*

BUT SERIOUSLY,

please try telling me that Tom Hiddleston is not the SEXIEST VILLAIN EVER.
LOOK AT HIM !

SEXAYYYYYYYYYYYY ;*
your argument is invalid.

bonus : Ways To Get Slapped By Everyone

so imma continue reading Catching Fire because I wanna read finish the whole series of The Hunger Games again before I go to watch Catching Fire.
BYE HAHAHAHAHAHAHA =D
puny god.

Farewell Party ♥

it's always nice to feel in reality what you mostly only see in Tumblr, isn't it? =)

Today, my friends threw me a surprise farewell party at KFC.
Of course I knew we were going to KFC to enjoy before I leave but what I DIDN'T EXPECT IS MY PRIMARY SCHOOL BUDDIES TO BE ALL THERE !!
KYAAAAA ~!
OMGG it's like sooo nostalgic to see them all again.
Most of us, expect Thivya haven't met in three years and meeting them again is like... deja vu.

So after school, I went to Divya's house along with Divya *of course*, Lavania and Roshini, just to be quarantined of course. They said they had a surprise waiting for me and they needed to do preparation so..
I WAS IN CAPTIVITY.

 Roshini and Lavania =)

 Lavania and me =)
We're all sweaty from school so we freshen up at Divya's.

After apparently receiving a thumbs up from the surprise in KFC, we walked to KFC.
Me and apple-headed Divya =D

When I reached KFC, I was still held in captivity downstairs while they prepared the surprise upstairs.
Basically, I was bored and moaning 24/7.

Took a pic of me sulking because I was,
HAHAHAHAHA.

This double pic is obviously me, showing my duck face to irritate my guard, Divya and trying to escape while she was basically telling me to shut up and sit still.
lols.
she should know that it's never gonna happen.
hahahahahahahahaha.

So then I was finally allowed upstairs and when I saw my primary school friends,
imma thinking : HOLY CRAP.
hahaha, but I got over it and it began to get... awkward?
because obviously my secondary school friends don't know my primary school friends and my primary school friends don't know my secondary school friends.
so I'm like that loud talkative bird and for THE ENTIRE DAY, I was like non-stop talking and they are all saying, "You're still as talkative as ever".
WHEN PADAHAL, I WAS TRY'NA LOOSEN THE SITUATION LAH.
AIYOO!

but eventually the situation loosen up and we even played Truth Or Dare which resulted in some great attacks,
for example,
Thivya tried to mess up Jinoth's hair on a dare but failed miserably.
Thivyan kicked Jinoth.
I GOT SLAPPED BY LAVANIA ON A DARE.
Thashini had to dance.
AND I WAS FORCED TO SING "WHEN YOU'RE GONE" by Anna Kendrick.
HAHAHAHAHAHA.

They better not upload it on Facebook or I'll kill all of them.

and then, there was a lot of picture-taking =D

Miss Apple Head Purple Dino IN THE HOUSE YO!
This missy and I are besties for more than 9 years and we still going strong !
I'll miss you when I'm not an Alam Megah kid anymore </3
Really, miss you babe.

 ekkkkk VANESSA!
*runs away*

The three musketeers, Parwathi and me =)

My friends from moral class =)
Special Thanks to the Lavania for planning this surprise party for me *and plotting behind my back with the rest* HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE.

This is...... Thivya pulling Jinoth's hair.
WAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKA.

Then after that, everyone went home and things got more quieter.
The remaining ones, Thivya, Parwathi and me went to visit My One Shop and then I bought them some SLURPEE.
We went back to sit at KFC while waiting for my sis to pick me up.
It was nice to have a quiet surrounding for a change and we could talk about our schools and lives without any disturbances.
It was great basically =)

I accidently didn't get Parwathi in the picture.
oops sorry.

We were having too much crazy fun, WE TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THE CAKE.
OMGGGGGG.
haha someone from the next door table was actually eyeing it and was about to steal it when we went to save it.
RULE OF KFC : NEVER LEAVE YOUR BEAUTIFUL CAKES ON THE TABLE UNSUPERVISED.

 Me with my cakes <3
Special thanks to Ganesh and Thivya for the cakes! They are so purdyyyyyy <3

 PIKACHUUUUUU!

Presents from my amazing friends =]
Thanks to Thivya for the musical globe, I know the bears inside actually symbolizes our relationship <3
Thanks to Divya for the ... er.. BLUE NEMO!
Thanks to Lavania for the friendship glass photo frame and the pretty bow clip!
Thanks to Parwathi for the necklace!
Thanks to Rafa for the Paris bag!
IN CONCLUSION, THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTS!
I LURVED IT <3

For the ending, I'll just quote myself in Instagram.
I want to express my thanks here to all my buddies who arranged this surprise farewell party for me today.
You guys are truly amazing and a BIG BIG THANK YOU to all my old primary school buddies who came to surprise me ! Seeing you guys made me reminisce of the good old days of being 8 again =] and to my current secondary school buddies, thank you so much for plotting the "hide the truth from Pui Yan" surprise and organising this party  I'll miss you guys so much. Rest assure, I'll never forget every single one of you.

Love, Pui Yan

Randomly Updating

Yo.
It seems like I didn't post about my outing with em' buddies last ... was it Friday?
not going to school regularly really does screw your brain and you won't even remember the day let alone the date so ahem,
here are some photos from the day.

 Subway for breakfast that day!
I felt so bad because my friend's mum took one hour just to find my house =<
Sorryyyyyyyyyyyy
Wasted the time for breakfast so we could only grab some Subway before rushing to the cinema next door

 STARBUCKS LIKE A BOSS.
more Java Chips please *.*

 Basically me and Vanessa.
*punch her*

 Subway-ed morning.

im too lazy to rotate the picture.
Us in the cinema.
Excuse the squinty eyes because I was forced to use flash and my eyes don't agree with flash.. AT ALL

We watched "Gravity" for the day because we heard the ratings were high and there were many praises for the movie especially because of the visuals.

The visuals were stunning ! REALLY the view of Earth from space was beautiful =0
The plot was pretty straight-forward and surprisingly, *spoiler* George Clooney actually dies at the first half of the movie.
I didn't really expect that because lol, what movie would it be if the lead characters died?
but he did and Ryan moved on by herself.
The acting was great and I think most people watching will be anticipating a major plot twist like :
ALIENS APPEAR.
but no,
no such crap appeared, it was just her against outerspace life.
Ironically, the quote for the poster was "Don't Let Go",
when the movie was about knowing when to let go.
lol now there's a major plot twist.

The funny thing was after the movie, the three of us agreed on one thing.
"We are never going to space".
That was how frightening the movie depicted space as, despite all the pretty visuals and images,
nope no way I'm ever going to vouch to go to space.
Dude, I need my constant oxygen on unlimited level.

on the other hand,

I'm already beginning my process of transferring from SMK Alam Megah 2 to SMK Kota Kemuning.
This transfer just clicks the switch in me that,
it only two weeks more before I will have to say goodbye to my old school already.
Hmm.
I'll miss all my friends at SMK Alam Megah 2.
Rest assure,
I'll never forget you guys
because

Cory Monteith.

The quote in the picture is so true.

Sometimes, you don't feel the sadness when someone's gone until the reality hits you.

Yes, he's gone.

and I think the tribute episode of Glee for Finn Hudson has hit every single Gleek with the impact, "he's gone".
It has hit me too.

In this tribute episode, I found of course Lea's performance emotional but the most touching one to me was Naya Rivera's "If I Die Young" especially when she just had the emotional breakdown ='<

Many people have been telling me, "He got what he deserved, he should have never touched drugs" on Cory's death.
I know, they are so harsh.
People nowadays have no compassion for a grieving person.

but then Chris Colfer or people may know him as "Kurt", Cory's character's stepbrother that was really meaningful,
"Everyone wants to talk about how he died too, but who cares? One moment in his whole life, I care more about how he lived." - Chris Colfer.
He did wrong involving himself in drugs, but everyone is too busy concentrating on all his wrongdoings, they don't see that he's also brought joy to people through his acting and melody to people's hearts with his voice.

but then, there's no use explaining anything to people - especially stupid people.
Just believe in what you want to believe.
I believe Cory's brought joy to this world and I'll always remember him as the handsome Finn Hudson whom we Gleeks have always admired and cherished.

Rest in peace, Cory.
We'll miss you.

MERDEKA

EXAM IS OVER.

i repeat.

                                                   EXAM IS OVER.

let's all get up and dance Gangnam Style ~!

So basically my long term jail is now destroyed and I have one month to enjoy and basically do nothing.

                                                  YAY

I'm not going to say how well I did the exams to anyone because honestly?
I don't even know myself.
so if you wanna know how I did,
ASK ME IN DECEMBER.
thankyou.

I don't think the "Pengawas Peperiksaan" or invigilators will ever forget the 2013 PMR Candidates of SMKAM 2.
because seriously, I think this is the first time ever that the students actually tried to bomb a invigilator.
NO, SERIOUSLY.
The guys threw firecrackers right in front of a passing invigilator, must have gave her a hell of a shock.
ANDDDDDDD *boomm*
did you hear that sound?
That's the sound of our school's reputation going down into mud.
*grin*

imma go and enjoy now,
and waste my life
toodles.

oh yeah, just for celebrations sake.

MERDEKA !!
